medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
NB: I've been having trouble getting through to the list today; apologies if this re-posting turns out to be a duplicate!
Although, as previously noted, the procession by boat of the BVM at Crotone is essentially civic-patronal in nature, annual processions of the Virgin by boat that _do_ focus on her role as protectress of seamen occur at many coastal locations in mainland southern Italy and in Sicily, e.g. Gaeta (Lazio), Catanzaro (Calabria), Capo d'Orlando (Sicily), during festivals of Our Lady of Safe Harbour (Madonna di Porto Salvo). Gaeta's version, documented from the eleventh century onward, takes place on or right after the second Sunday in August. So we've just missed it.
Best again,
John Dillon
