medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Off the cuff... I don't think bodily corruption was considered one way or another - fact of life, er, death. After all, bones were all that was left of Saint Peter (I won't get into the controversy RE the archaeology of it all). BUT being incorrupt was, I suppose, seen as miraculous and therefore proof of sanctity. If I'm wrong about this, I hope a Learned One disabuses me (and all I've led astray) of this notion.

p.s. I have no idea what sort of embalming was done in the early 17th c., but Henri IV's corpse was quite well preserved when the Revolutionaries dug him up (or out). However, no one put forth his cause...

What happens if a saint's body is discovered to be corrupt? Was
corruption attributed to the devil, or having the wrong body, or
bad treatment by locals, or...?
Morbidly curious,
