medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. June) is the feast day of:
Peter (d. c. 64) Where would the study of medieval religion be
without St. Peter? Tertullian is the source of the tradition that
Peter was crucified upside-down in the reign of Nero.
Paul (d. c. 65) I expect that everyone who subscribes to this list
knows about this guy, too.
Mary, mother of John Mark (1st cent.) This Mary appears in Acts
12:12. Her house in Jerusalem seems to have been a meeting place for
the early Christian community.
Marcellus and Anastasius (d. 274) M and A were missionaries active
in the area around Bourges (modern France). They were martyred at
Argenton in the reign of Aurelian.
Salome and Judith (9th cent.) Legend tells that Salome was an
Anglo-Saxon princess in exile in Bavaria; Judith was her widowed
childhood friend. They both became hermits, attached to the
monastery of Niederaltaich. Their vita adds the interesting detail
that Salome prayed for illness so she wouldn't be forced into
marriage; God obligingly gave her leprosy.
Gemma of Gurk (d. 1045) Gemma (or Hemma, or Emma) was a relative of
Emperor Henry II. After she was widowed she founded a double
monastery at Gurk in Carinthia (Austria), becoming a nun there
herself. Her cult was confirmed in 1938.
