medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. June) is the feast day of:
Fortunatus the Philosopher (d. c. 569) Fortunatus was from Vercelli.
He became a bishop somewhere in northern Italy, but the Lombards
drove him into exile. He then settled at Chelles (near Paris), where
he was widely admired for his scholarship.
Alena (d. c. 640) Alena was born near Brussels to non-Christian
parents. She snuck off and got baptized without their knowledge; she
was seize and killed while secretly going to mass.
Jerome of Vallombrosa (d. 1135) Jerome was a monk of Vallombrosa.
He became a hermit and spent 35 years living only on bread and water.
Elizabeth of Schonau (d. 1164) Elizabeth entered the Benedictine
nunnery of Schönau (near Bonn) at the age of twelve. After her
profession she started having visions; her brother described them in
the biography of E. that he wrote. She was partly discredited as
delusional, but then got new laurels for her humility and patience.
She became abbess in 1157.
