medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (17. April) is the feast day of:
Anicetus (d. 166) Anicetus was a Syrian who became bishop of Rome in
c. 155. He was celebrated as a martyr for centuries (on what seems
to have been a general concurrence that all early popes *must* have
been martyrs); since he wasn't a martyr, his cult was suppressed in
1969.
Donnan of Eigg and companions (d. c. 618) Sometimes hailed as the
only early Irish martyr, unfortunately Donnan's very existence may be
a case of later wishful thinking. Legend tells that D. was a monk at
Iona who went on from their to found a daughter monastery on the
island of Eigg. He and his entire community of 53 monks are supposed
to have been massacred (on Easter Sunday, no less) by Danish raiders.
Robert de Turlande (d. 1067) Robert was from (the) Auvergne. He
became a priest and canon at Brioude, then spent some time at Cluny.
After a pilgrimage to Rome he came back and became a hermit near
Brioude. With his disciples he founded the great monastery of
Chaise-Dieu, which in turn became the mother house of a large
Benedictine congregation.
Clare Gambacorta (blessed) (d. 1419) Clare was daughter of a ruler
of Pisa. She was widowed at age fifteen and wanted to become a Poor
Clare. Her father wouldn't stomach this, but allowed her to become a
Dominican nun. She founded her own convent in Pisa and worked to
reform the order more broadly. C's cult was confirmed in 1830.
