medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. April) is the feast day of:
Cynwl (6th cent.) Cynwl was the brother of St. Deiniol of Bangor.
He was a hermit in Wales. Several churches were dedicated to him.
Erconwald (d. 693) Legend says that Erconwald was a member of the
East Anglian royal family. He was the founding abbot of Chertsey
(Surrey) and also founded a convent at Barking for his sister St.
Ethelburga. E. became bishop of London in 675. He had a shrine at
St. Paul's Cathedral (London) until the Reformation.
Hildegard (d. 783) Charlemagne's wife, not the famous mystic.
Hildegard was a daughter of the duke of Swabia; she married Chuck in
771. She bore him eight children, supported monasticism, and was a
friend of St. Lioba.
Forannan (d. 984) Forannan was a bishop in Ireland before he
wandered off to the continent. In time he became a monk at the
monastery of Waulsort (Belgium) and in 962 abbot. He introduced the
Gorzian reform to his house.
Adjutor (Ayutre) (d. 1131) Adjutor was a Norman lord who went on the
First Crusade and became a monk at Tiron after he returned. He
finished life as a hermit.
Ludwig von Bruck (d. 1429) Yet another supposed victim of Jewish
ritual murder at Easter. Ludwig was a boy who died under mysterious
circumstances at Ravensburg near Constance.
