medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. April) is the feast day of:
Mary Clopas (1st cent.) One of the many Marys who appear in the
gospels. This Mary was the wife of Clopas or Alpheus, and mother of
James the Less. She appears as one of the three Marys who witnessed
the crucifixion. There are apparently lots of legends about her life
after that, but my annoying saints book just says that they are
"worthless" without giving details.
Acacius of Amida (d. c. 421) Acacius was bishop of Amida in Persia
(now Turkish Kurdistan) and, despite his death date, *wasn't* a
martyr. Instead, he impressed Shah Bahram V so much by his efforts
to ransom Persian prisoners of war, even selling his church vessels,
that Bahram stopped persecuting Christians on A's account.
Waldetrude (d. c. 688) Waldetrude was a daughter of two saints, wife
of another, and mother of yet four more. When W's husband (St.
Vincent Madelgar) became a monk she became a nun, founding a convent
at Mons, Belgium (around which the town grew up).
Hedda of Peterborough and companions (d. 870) These were the abbot
and 84 monks of Peterborough in England, killed in a viking raid and
venerated as martyrs.
Casilda of Briviesca (d. c. 1050) Casilda is a popular Spanish
saint. She was a native of Toledo and perhaps was a Muslim convert
to Christianity. She was a hermit near Briviesca (Burgos province).
Gaucherius de Meulan (d. 1140) Gaucherius (Gaultier) was an
Augustinian canon, founding abbot of a canonry at St. John of Aureil
near Limoges. He also helped his friend Stephen Muret found the
monastery of Grandmont.
Thomas of Tolentino & companions (d. 1321) Thomas of Tolentino was a
Franciscan who became a missionary to Armenia and Persia. He was on
his way to Ceylon (en route to China) when shipwrecked near Bombay
with three companions (two Franciscans and a layman). The native
Muslims didn't appreciate their sudden appearance and beheaded all
four. Their cult was approved in 1894.
