Dear All
Having left the Council of Museums in Wales I am now the Regional Development Officer (Objective 3 areas) with NIACE Dysgu Cymru. The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education is the organisation which, amongst many other things, coordinates and promotes Adult Learners' Week (ALW) in May and the Sign Up Now (SUN) campaigns in January and September each year.
NIACE exists to "promote adult learning".
Given my background in the museum education sector I am keen to see more contact between museums and NIACE. I would like to encourage more liaison between museums (and libraries), community groups, local authorities and the HE and FE sectors. There are ways in which NIACE can help. For example, here at NIACE Dysgu Cymru we have grants for which museums are eligible. These grants exist to aid the organisation of "taster sessions" during ALW and SUN campaigns. Hands up if you knew that!
Therefore can I ask for 2 actions in the short term:
* Can you let me know of adult education projects which you have undertaken in conjunction with either NIACE or NIACE Dysgu Cymru
* If you are a museum in Wales and you would like information re our current round of grant-aid please e-mail me your details.
If you are a museum in England please have a look at the NIACE website on www.niace.org.uk to see how we can work together.
NIACE does not operate in Northern Ireland or Scotland. However...
Scottish museums should contact the Scottish Adult Learning Partnership (SALP) on 0131 220 5567 [log in to unmask]
Northern Ireland museums should contact the Educational Guidance Service for Adults (EGSA) on 028 9024 4274 www.egsa.org.uk
I hope this will be the first of many e-mails on the subject of adult learning and the museum sector.
Kind regards
Essex Havard
