Family friendly museums: is nowhere sacred?
A Museums and Galleries Month 2004 debate
6.30 pm 6 May 2004
National Portrait Gallery, London
* Dea Birkett, The Guardian
* Rt Hon Frank Dobson, MP
* Ian Forbes, Killhope Museum
* Penny Hay, 5x5x5
Chair: Stephen Allen, National Portrait Gallery Head of Education
Does being "family friendly" mean museums can't shock or challenge? How
does a museum interest children - and take their needs seriously - while
also exciting adults? Does being "family friendly" mean changing collection
and exhibition plans - or is it up to the education staff to pick up the
pieces? Does the artist have something special to offer in stimulating
children's engagement?
Your chance to discuss with
* Dea Birkett, champion of the Guardian's Kids in Museums Campaign
* Rt Hon Frank Dobson MP, former Secretary of State for Health, Chair DCMS
Review of play areas "Getting Serious about Play"
