Call for Papers
"Vorwärts! (mit Blick zurück...): Utopia and Nostalgia in German
literature and culture"
April 29th, 30th and May 1st, 2004, at McGill University, Montréal,
Canada
Nietzsche believed that Germans belonged to the day before yesterday
and the day after tomorrow: "as yet they have no today", wrote the
philosopher in Beyond Good and Evil. Inspired by the current trend of
"Ostalgie" (Nostalgia for the former East German way of life), the
Third Graduate Student Conference of McGill's German Studies Department
will explore the broader utopian and nostalgic discourse in German
literature and culture. Falling back to an idealized past or springing
forward to an ideal future, the idealism inherent in utopia and
nostalgia did not die with Nietzsche's denunciation: it lives on and
offers us the opportunity to cast a new light on German literature and
culture
We invite all scholars to submit abstracts for papers dealing with this
topic from various approaches, such as (for example):
* Theoretical and philosophical discourse on Utopia and Nostalgia
* State of the (re)union: problems of German reunification
* "Ostalgie": Nostalgia for the former East German way of life
* Memory and guilt issue in the former East Germany
* Blut-und-Boden Utopia of the National-Socialists
* Romanticism and revolution
* The myth of a national identity
We welcome interdisciplinary projects in various fields, such as (but
not limited to):
* Film studies / * Cultural studies / * Jewish studies / * Women's
studies
Please submit your abstract (with title and description but without
your name, max. 1 page, in German, English or French) and a separate
sheet with your name, address and the title of your project before
January 31st, 2004.
