medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. October) is the feast day of:
Aizan and Sazan (d. c. 400) These two brothers were nobles of Axum (modern
Ethiopia). Legend tells that they were friends of Athanasius, and became
missionaries in their homeland.
Remigius of Rheims (d. c. 533) Remigius, the apostle of the Franks, was a
Gallo-Roman noble. When still a layman he was elected bishop of Rheims in
459, and was the most influential bishop of Gaul/the kingdom of the Franks
during the extraordinary 74 years he spent in office. He played a central
role in the conversion of the Franks, baptizing Clovis. For some
unfathomable reason, this historic and important saint's cult was confined
to local calendars in 1969.
Melor (d. c. 540) Melor's legend tells that he was a son of a Breton
ruler, killed as a child by an evil brother who didn't want any rivals to
the throne. His cult developed at Lanmeur near Morlaix.
Romanus the Melodist (d. c. 540) The Syrian Romanus became a priest at
Constantinople, where he won fame as the greatest hymn-writer of the
eastern Christian tradition. He is credited with the composition of a
thousand hymns, of which about 80 still survive.
Bavo (d. 660) Bavo was from Hesbaye (near Liege in Belgium); he led a
profligate youth but after he was widowed he was converted to a penitential
life by a sermon of St. Amand's. Bavo founded the monastery later named
after him in Ghent; he himself settled as a hermit nearby.
Angelo Scarpetti (blessed) (d. c. 1306) Angelo was a native of Borgo San
Sepulcro. He became an Augustinian friar, and was famous for his miracles;
there is a story that he worked to have a criminal pardoned and when he
failed and the man was executed, A. then resurrected him.
