medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. October) is the feast day of:
Beregisus (d. c. 725) Beregisus was a priest, the confessor of the
Carolingian Pepin of Heristal. With Pepin's support, B. founded the
monastery of St-Hubert in the Ardennes (Belgium).
Leodegar (Leger) (d. 678) Leodegar became abbot of a monastery in Poitiers
in 653, and bishop of Autun in 659. He got involved in court politics and
won the enmity of Ebroin, the mayor of the palace, who doesn't seem to have
been very restrained in his treatment of ecclesiastics. L. was degraded
from his office, imprisoned, blinded, and finally murdered. He is
sometimes charmingly depicted in art with his eyes, tongue, and other parts
of his face on a plate.
Gerin (d. 676) St. Leodegar's brother, Gerin was arrested with him at the
order of the foul and bloodthirsty Ebroin, mayor of the palace under the
Merovingians. He was stoned to death near Arras, on suspicion of
conspiracy.
Theophilus of Seleution (d. c. 750) Theophilus was a Bulgarian who became
a monk in a community on Mt. Seleution (Anatolia). He was an opponent of
iconoclasm, for which he was persecuted and exiled.
