medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Farmer includes the following in his write-up of Apollonia: "Apollonia's
death has been much discussed by theologians concerned with the legitimacy
or otherwise of her throwing herself into the flames." There are certainly
other cases of early virgin martyrs, for example throwing themselves off
the roof to escape rape. I wonder if they've generated the same
controversy.
