medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. February) is the feast day of:
Martyrs of the Plague at Alexandria (d. 262) A group of Christians cared
for the sick during a great epidemic in Alexandria; Dionysius of Alexandria
describes their selfless work and deaths. They were entered into the Roman
Martyrology under this day.
Sira (d. 559) Sira was the daughter of a prominent Persian magus. She
converted to Christianity, and after a long time worshipping in secret
professed her faith publicly. She was maltreated and flogged, and when she
persisted was hanged.
Oswald of Worcester (d. 992) Oswald was the scion of a Danish military
family. He became a canon of Winchester, then a monk at Fleury. When he
returned to England, he was appointed bishop of Worcester. He was an
active reformer and monastic founder, working very closely with the king
(perhaps too closely; besides being involved in local government, O.
profited greatly from the king, and even received the archbishopric of York
in plurality).
Elisabeth of Pomerania (d. 1393) Elisabeth was the wife of Emperor Charles
IV and mother of Sigismund. After she was widowed, she spent the rest of
her life on prayer and works of charity. She died "in the odor of
sanctity" and was widely regarded as a saint.
