medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colleagues:
I am a graduate medieval art history student writing a research paper on
the nave frescoes (c. 1100) at St.-Savin-sur-Gartempe in France. Here is
my question: where would various segments of the congregation have been
placed during the Mass and would there have been processions through the
church? The frescoes are on the barrel vault of the hall church and I am
trying to determine if there was an optimal viewing space (if so, and the
spaces were regulated, then they were aimed at a specific audience). The
frescoes are of Genesis/Exodus scenes but are set up in a zig-zag order,
perhaps in response to a procession; I don't know.
Does anyone know of sources where I might find out about designated spaces
during Mass and about processions?
If anyone has further theories, I'd be glad to hear them; off-list
discussions are also welcome.
Thanks,
Patricia Kiernan
