medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. February) is the feast day of:
Severianus of Scythopolis (d. c. 452) Severianus was bishop of
Scythopolis. On his return from the Council of Chalcedon (which, among
other business, condemned the Eutychian heresy), he was murdered by a group
of disgruntled Eutychian heretics, with the active collusion of Empress
Eudoxia.
Germanus and Randoald (d. c. 677) Germanus was a noble of Francia who
became a monk and eventually bbot of Granfel. In that position he was
devoted to the poor, and resisted the duke of Alsace's oppressions of both
monks and the poor. When G. protested, the duke had the monastery's lands
ravaged. When G intervened to help the peasants, the duke promised to stop
his depredations. . . but his soldiers caught and killed Germanus and his
prior Randoald as they returned to their monastery.
George of Amestris (d. c. 825) George was born near Amestris (on the Black
Sea). He became a hermit, then a monk, then bishop of Amestris. He is
perhaps most notable for his successful defense of his city against Muslim
attacks.
Peter Damian (d. 1072) Peter was a native of Ravenna. After studying
grammar and rhetoric and teaching for a time, he became a Camaldolese monk
at Fonte Avellana in 1035. He became abbot, founded other monasteries,
lived an ascetic life, gave simonists a hard time, and started the career
as a writer that has left us four weighty tomes of letters and treatises
(in the MGH edition) besides many sermons. In 1057 PD became
cardinal-bishop of Ostia and spent the rest of his life as a prominent
member of the papal reform movement, despite his periodic attempts to
return to the monastery.
