medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm hoping someone on this learned list might clarify a matter of
liturgical terminology for me.
My understanding is that the term "oratio" in liturgical offices refers to
the collect, or, rather, that this is how we translate the term. Is this
the term we also use in translating items labeled "oratio"s in Books of
Hours - or do we use the term "oration". I suppose I don't really
understand what the "oratio" is -- they seem always to be a formal
entreaty to God for intercession, and in saint's offices, usually in
response to a petition from that saint. Certain "oratio"s from the
liturgical offices used for communal celebration are adopted by Books of
Hours. But all clarification would be duly appreciated.
with sincere regards - cecilia gaposchkin
