medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. July) is the feast day of:
Abdon and Sennen (d. c. 303) Abdon and Sennen, apparently Persians, were
killed in Rome during Diocletian's persecution. Their cult is attested as
early as 354 and a fresco of the sixth or seventh century still survives
from near their tomb.
Peter Chrysologus (d. c. 450) Peter was a native of Imola (near Ravenna).
He was a deacon when Valentinian III and Galla Placidia made him bishop of
Ravenna. He was very highly regarded as a preacher and many of his sermons
survive. Peter was declared a doctor of the Church in 1729.
Tatwin (d. 734) Tatwin was archbishop of Canterbury 731-4, after being a
monk at Bredon in Mercia. Bede describes Tatwin as prudent, devout, and
learned.
Archangelus of Calafatimi (blessed) (d. 1460) Archangelus, beatified in
1836, was a Sicilian hermit. When Martin V suppressed the Sicilian
hermitages, he joined the Observant Franciscans, and spent the rest of his
life promoting the new branch of the order in Sicily.
Edward Powell, Ricahrd Featherstone, Thomas Abel (blessed) (d. 1540) These
three men were hanged, drawn, and quartered as traitors at Smithfield,
England. Powel was a canon of Salisbury and counsellor of Catherine of
Aragon; Featherstone and Abel were both chaplains to Catherine. All three
refused the Act of Supremacy.
