medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Well, actually, I was just trying to flaunt my (limited) knowledge of the
Easter issue myself. Easter was linked to the celebration of Passover in
the early church, which unfortunately (for other ethnic/religious groups in
the Roman Empire) is calculated using a lunar calendar, on the 14th day of
the month Nisan. The quartodecimans ("14 dayers") argued that Easter
should be celebrated on the 14th of Nisan, no matter what day of the week
it fell on. Victor tried to impose the Roman practice of celebrating
Easter on the Sunday following the 14th. Interestingly, before the late
2nd century, the Roman church didn't have a special Easter festival, and
earlier bishops of Rome (such as Anicetus (c. 155-c. 166) seemed willing to
accept the Asia Minor practice of celebrating it on the 14th. (Compliments
of the Oxford Dictionary of Popes, since I'm too lazy to go downstairs and
get another reference book) And then the Irish/Roman spat over the true
date of Easter is another matter.
