medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. April) is the feast day of:
Liberalis of Treviso (d. 400) Liberalis is still one of the most-honored
saints of northeast Italy. He was an adult convert to Christianity, at
which time he became a priest. As a missionary Liberalis worked tirelessly
throughout northeastern Italy, suffering frequent persecution by the
Arians.
Tutilo (d. 909) The St. Gall monk Tutilo was famed as an inspired artist,
both an architect and a painter (especially paintings of the Virgin Mary,
says my source, although it seems early for that).
Zita (d. 1272) Zita was born in c.1212 in Monsagrati (Italy). At the age
of twelve she became a maidservant in the household of Pagano di Fatinelli
in Lucca. Humiliated and badly treated for years, Zita gradually won the
affection of her employers. After nearly 50 years of service in the same
house, she died. A series of miracles led to her popular veneration; the
cult was already recognized in 1278. Formal canonization followed in 1696.
Zita's still-intact body is in the church of S. Frediano in Lucca.
Pedro Armengol (blessed) (d. 1302) Pedro was the son of the count of
Urgell (northern Spain), born in 1238. He enjoyed a wild youth, but in
1258 entered the Mercedarian order, devoting his life after that time to
the freeing of prisoners. Thus, for example, he offered himself as hostage
for the freeing of 18 children, as a result of which he was imprisoned and
tortured in Algeria for several years (on that account he is honored as a
martyr). He is supposed to have been miraculously saved and returned to
his home. Pedro was beatified in 1686.
