medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. April) is the feast day of:
Agape of Thessalonike (d. 304) Agape was martyred in the Christian
persecution of Diocletian in Thessalonike. She was burned to death, along
with her sisters Chionia and Irene. For centuries there was a basilica in
Thessalonike dedicated to the three holy sisters, and Agape's relics are
still kept in the church of S. Martino al Monti in Rome.
Walarich (d. 622) The hermit Walrich (Walricus, Valery) was born i c. 560.
He lived as a priest and hermit in Leuconay in northern France. His cult
is still alive in Normandy.
Hugh of Grenoble (d. 1132) Hugh was born in 1053 in Chateau-neuf-d'Isere
(France). He became bishop of Grenoble in 1080 and governed the dioce for
52 years. Hugh played a very important role in the establishment of the
Carthusian order. He was canonized in 1134.
Hugh of Bonnevaux (d. 1184) Hugh was born in c. 1120 in France, the nephew
of Hugh of Grenoble. He entered the Cistercian order and from 1162 was the
abbot of Leoncel; from 1166 abbot of Bonnevaux. Hugh founded furhter
monasteries, and was also very important as a peace mediator---most
famously in 1177 between Pope Alexander III and Frederick Barbarossa.
Caesarius of Speyer (d. prob. 1239) Not formally canonized. Caesarius was
born in c. 1195 in Spyer. In c. 1220 he joined the young Franicscan order,
and in 1221 led the first Franciscans to Germany. In Augsburg Caesarius
founded the the first Franciscan convent in Germany. Caesarius became the
first Franciscan provincial in Germany.
