medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A discussion emerged recently around the issue of the Eastern and Western
understandings of the Virgin's upcoming (August 15th) "dormition". The
former term is used in the Eastern Church emphasizing the Virgin's holy
death, whereas in the West the feast emphasizes the reunion of Mary with
Christ, in bodily form, as in some ways perhaps the feminine mirror of his
resurrection. At any rate, at issue is what position the East takes about
the bodily assumption of the virgin: is it rejected or simply of secondary
interest in the liturgy of the Eastern feast?
