medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. July) is the feast day of:
Julius and Aaron (d. c. 304) British martyrs of Caerleon. They are
mentioned by Gildas and Bede, but nothing is known about them except the
bare fact of their martyrdom. Even that has been questioned, since it is
doubted that the Great Persecution was carried out in Britain.
Pambo (d. c. 385/390) Pambo was a disciple of Antony of the Desert. He
was one of the most famous of the desert hermits of his time, and an early
monastic founder. His fame attracted many monks from both eastern and
western Europe.
Gallus of Clermont (d. 553) Born c. 488 in the Auvergne, Gallus became a
monk and priest, and in 526 was elected bishop of Clermont. According to
tradition, he saved the Auvergne from the plague.
Eparchius (Cybard) (d. 581) Heir to the Frankish duchy of Périgord,
Eparchius renounced his claims and became a monk and priest. He settled in
542 in Angoulême, where he attracted many followers.
Simeon of Emesa (d. c. 589) Simeon, nicknamed "the fool," lived a solitary
life in the desert near the Dead Sea for nearly thirty years before going
to Emesa (Syria), where he led a life as "fool for the sake of Christ."
Mocked by the authorities, he won great popular veneration. In modern
times, he is still venerated in Russia.
