medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear friends
I have very minimal knowledge of patristic texts, but this equation of pagan
deities with demons does remind me of a painting of the legend of St
Nicholas I once worked on. It showed the 'foul Diana' disguised as a nun,
attempting to destroy the shrine of the saint by persuading a young pilgrim
to take a phial of 'holy oil' (in actuality Greek fire) to his tomb. I do
not have the references to hand, but I suspect that the story can be traced
back to Paul the Deacon. I wonder whether the hagiography of such universal
saints might be another potential source for Germanic knowledge of this
equation between demons and pagan deities.
With every good wish
Miriam
