Greetings.
Ken Friedman invited me to organize a team of of PhD students to prepare a
bibliography of important books for the various sections of the La Clusaz
conference proceedings. What seemed like a fairly straightforward task,
became more difficult for two reasons: 1) there are many great books out
there, and 2) design does not have a well developed literature. In fact
other fields have library science specialists who become bibliographers for
a discipline or sub-discipline. We have no such expert - in essence, we are
trying to perform this function.
Doing it alone would be a mistake. So this note is to invite your
participation and input. We have developed a website listing books in the
areas of:
- Philosophy of Design
- Methods of Design Research
- Theory and Practice in Relation in Design
Our shorthand reference is: Philosophy, Methods, Theory-Practice. On this
site, we are asking you questions about these books. Each section has about
60 books so it will take some time to go through the list. You are invited
to add books that we've overlooked after you've looked through the existing
list. You are also invited to volunteer to write annotations (125 words
maximum) for a book (or books) that you select. (Of course your annotation
will be credited to you.) In this way, selection of books important to
design becomes a community activity and we share reference knowledge. These
bibliographies will be published and available on the web in some lasting
way.
The various lists will be limited to 50 books. The focus of the lists is
fairly general -- we cannot get into specialized sub-disciplines for
obvious reasons. Perhaps others will develop another level of detail and
share it based on their own research interests. For example, a listing of
books on semiology or semiotics is not what we after, we are after books
that speak broadly to design if they are not about design themselves, i.e.,
they come from another discipline. So for the example just mentioned, the
question becomes is there a book on "sign" theory that is general and
useful to design.
We are not building a "canon" as was discussed on the listserv - but we are
trying to identify a group of critical and useful books.
It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete a list. You can select
one of the three lists and return later to do other lists if you choose.
