BEYOND THE MUSEUM : WORKING WITH COLLECTIONS IN THE DIGITAL AGE
FRIDAY 20TH APRIL 2001
THE OXFORD UNION DEBATING CHAMBER
http://www.hcu.ox.ac.uk/beyond/museum/
Organised jointly by: Humanities Computing Unit, University of Oxford,
and mda
*Is the new digital age the answer to the prayers of museums, archives,
and libraries?
*Does it free up collections allowing unprecedented access facilities for
scholars and the public?
*Or is it all built on a house of cards?
*Do the new technologies really offer us anything, or are they
sidetracking the holders of the nation's heritage into areas that really
have unproven benefits?
*Is funding being diverted away from more needy services?
*Can the museum, or similar institution, actually survive in such
a fast-changing culture?
These questions and many more will be answered in the one-day colloquium
Beyond the Museum.
Set in the historical Debating Chamber of the Oxford Union, distinguished
speakers will present their views and debate the future shape of our
culture's landscape. The format of Beyond the Museum will be a mixture of
presentations, open discussion, and debates. We will aim to stimulate
discussion between the speakers and encourage the audience to participate
fully.
This year's motions to be debated are:
'This House believes that museums are in danger of losing the initiative
in the digital revolution.'
'This House believes that the new technologies are contributing to the
dumbing down of museums.'
The list of invited speakers is growing all the time, and at the moment we
are pleased to announce the participation of:
Lynne Brindley, CEO, The British Library
Professor Lola Young, Project Director for the National Museums and
Archives of Black History and Culture, Middlesex University
John Wilson, Presenter of BBC Radio 4's 'Front Row'
Mike Houlihan, CEO, Ulster Museum
For the last six years the Humanities Computing Unit (HCU) has organised a
series of successful events which have discussed the place of technology
in the spheres of literature, learning, and our cultural resources. In
2000 the HCU brought together a number of illustrious speakers in the
Oxford Union to discuss whether the Internet was Beyond Control
(www.hcu.ox.ac.uk/beyond/). This year the HCU is teaming up with mda
(www.mda.org.uk) to present a discussion focusing on the nature of our
cultural heritage in the digital age. This year mda is holding its Annual
Reception as part of Beyond the Museum.
mda is at the forefront of promoting and supporting information management
within the cultural sector. It pioneers the development of standards in
information management and promotes the effectiveness of existing
standards and best practice through advice, publications and training. In
order to fulfil these aims mda works with museums and related sectors
including built heritage, archives, libraries and education. Since 1998
it has held a series of Annual Receptions in order to bring
representatives from these sectors together.
