A one-day workshop
'One-to-one teaching'
Friday 4th May 2001
University of Greenwich (in the former Royal Naval College)
9.30 am to 4.00 pm
£95
Organised by The School of Post Compulsory Education and Training
(PCET)
Discussions about teaching in higher and further education usually
focus on situations involving one teacher with a group of learners.
However, much teaching is undertaken in a situation that involves one
tutor and one learner. This session will examine the opportunities
and problems this presents and will explore different strategies and
approaches to use to promote effective learning in a one-to-one
context.
This workshop is appropriate for those lecturers, tutors and
support staff in higher and further education who are involved in
supporting learning on a one-to-one basis, e.g. in tutorials, with
distance or flexible learners, in science and computer laboratories,
or supervising projects and research.
Attending this seminar will help you to
(a) Examine different approaches to one-to one teaching
(b) Plan for one-to-one teaching in order to :
- take into account the learning needs/expectations of the student
- use a variety of teaching/learning activities
- establish a situation which fosters a productive tutor/student
relationship
- help students to develop an autonomous approach to
learning
(c) Identify and practice skills important to this way of
teaching
(d) Develop ways of evaluating and developing one-to-one
teaching
The session will be led by Anne Cox, who is a full-time tutor
and pathway leader in the School of Post Compulsory Education and
Training. She has extensive experience of working in both further
and higher education and of supporting students in one-to-one
situations on Certificate in Education, PGCE and masters programmes.
