Those of us involved in the media side of PEST are always on the lookout for
documents that back up our prejudices. Researchers don't accept 30 years of
experience in the business, so it helps to have the odd, sometimes very odd,
'official' document.
Find a couple of these at the ESRC web site:
http://www.esrc.ac.uk/4books/bookhome.html
Look for:
Developing a media strategy
Television and radio: a best practice guide
Unfortunately, someone at ESRC doesn't understand how the internet works —
well, they are social scientists — so they have zipped the pdf files. (Note
to web minders, compressing files rarely speeds up download times, because
most modems will compress 'on the fly' achieving the same result as zipping
without adding an obstacle to accessibility, and in any case pdf files are
pretty efficient and don't shrink much.)
Forget about the fact that someone has posted uncropped, pre-production
formats, maybe we are all expected to go out and print them by the thousand.
In the past I have found the ESRC's documents in this area to be
particularly good, getter than anything from the other research councils,
and just as relevant to the "real" sciences.
These (undated) versions look slimmer and less impressive than earlier
documents, particularly the old "Pressing home your findings", but I guess
they have to have something new.
