Community Liaison manager
MG3
One year post

Salary range £18,400 - £26,000

The Learning Unit in the Science Museum develops and delivers a range of
educational services, activities, events and resources designed to maximise
learning opportunities for all the Museum's audiences. Part of the
Learning Unit is also responsible for the development and delivery of the
Science Museum Audience Development Programme.

Over 300,000 educational visitors each year visit the Museum ranging from
nursery children to university students, and at weekends and at holiday
times, large numbers of families visit, especially areas such as the
Interactive Galleries.

A new team is being established to develop our understanding of audiences,
especially those who do not visit the museum for a variety of reasons. The
team will develop a range of approaches and expertise in this area, working
closely with groups and communities and furthering our understanding of the
barriers to visiting. As an essential part of this audience development
initiative, we will be developing two strands:

· one which will focus particularly on the 'products and shows' which will
be taken out to various communities and outreach initiatives,
· the other strand working closely with particular audiences and developing
ideas and projects with them.

The whole unit will work closely together and presenters and audience
developers will both be involved with working with audiences and also
delivering all aspects of outreach. The Outreach Programme is developing
rapidly with many exciting opportunities to be involved in new and current
projects. Programme developers will focus particularly on developing the
Science shows and outreach modules whilst the primary focus of audience
developers will be to work closely with audiences, identify ways to
overcome barriers and produce 'tailor-made' programmes.

This new post holder will take particular responsibility for the research
and relationships with particular communities and audience groups and
developing programmes jointly with them.

This whole team will run events outside the Science Museum which may
include working in other parts of the UK, or overseas. Early morning,
evening or weekend work may be required. Holidays must be fitted around
busy times.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES & MAIN DUTIES:

· To develop partnerships with communities and other organisations who have
similar priorities.
· To network inside the Museum on all aspects of audience development. To
initiate projects with colleagues and external groups.
· To maintain a record of all the interactions and projects running with
external groups and communities
· To research the area of social need and barriers to visiting in
conjunction with colleagues in the Visitor Research Team. To be aware of
projects running in other museums and galleries in the UK and further afield.
· To work with Audience development manager and other colleagues to develop
the audience development and outreach policy.
· To help deliver the Science Museum Outreach programme to the highest
standard along with other members of the audience development team.
· To work with the Audience Development Manager and Shows and Outreach
Manager to develop a range of new audience initiatives.
· To represent the Science Museum outside the museum. On occasions you may
