Dear Fish,
I thought I should put my head above the parapet with a couple of
thoughts.
1. On GIS - I'm with Paul and Jason on this. Things like DNF will
change the way we do business in terms of the supply and exchange of
geo-spatial data. Other developments like GML and the Open GIS
Consortium really demand our attention sooner rather than later. The GI
industry is shifting towards much more in the way of conformance and
open standards. This will make it a lot easier for us all to share geo
information with each other in the future - but that newly found ability
may cause us grief unless we are clear what we are exchanging.
The ADS G2GP on GIS probably needs a thorough review in the light of
these (and other) developments. The CAD guide is now out to review, so
some of the issues are imminent. Quite selfishly, I agree with Ed's
that we need to keep the guides fresh. I hope to make you all help us
do that :-)
2. FISH and HEIRnet - I wonder whether there's a danger of FISH taking
on some of the work that HEIRnet has already progressed - such as their
work on z39.50. FISH needs to be aware that HEIRNET is concerned with
information networking within and outwith the HIst Env sector throughout
the British Isles and will be considering some of these things at a
strategic level - so it will be important to maintain a dialogue with
them
and avoid overlaps.
All best wishes,
William
