This also means they don't make the cradle for the loose globe anymore. This
is also a useful feature, because the cradle on my globe is graduated in
degrees, so by placing the globe correctly it is possible to measure great
circle distances, and also find the point that is X degrees away on a
bearing of Y. Many quick locations of earthquakes were done in this way when
the only data was what was coming in off the chart recorder in the first
minutes ...

Subject: Tectonic globe
Hello all,
following is an excerpt from a message I got from Scanglobe after enquiring
about a topographic/tectonic globe without spindle.
"First of all I can inform you that basically every globe we make is
designed
for being fitted into a stand and meridian to hold it. This also means that
holes
are punched in both the North and South Pole. Consequently at least part
of the information you are looking for is not present. (...)
Nevertheless we can supply you with a loose globeball, but as mentioned
there
are holes punched in both Poles. Please advise in case this will have your
interest
after all.
You also ask if a plate tectonics globe has been considered and in fact it
has. So far
we have abstained from making it as we have deemed the possible volume
involved too
small to justify the costs. We need to make many thousands of any new map
design or
to charge a very high price and neither solution has seemed possible to us.
Our development
efforts are more concentrated on adapting the product to various
lifestyles/home decors.
Once again thank you for your interest and hoping to have answered your
queries.
Best regards

...I guess the task ahead is to make plate tectonics a lifestyle issue for
thousands of kids and adults...!
Best regards,
Frauke
