We have just completed a project for the Department of Health on ethnic minority children with learning disabilities and part of the project was looking at material available for staff (as well as cultural awareness training). There are lots of these manuals about and the best we have come across was:
Cultural Awareness. Perween Riaz and Suzanne Paggs. Nottingham Community NHS Trust. 1997.
However I am unsure if it has been evaluated. As a word of caution, packs of this nature should not be used in isolation as they can reinforce stereotyping and pigeon holing, and should be used with cultural awareness training and an organisational approach that meets the needs of staff and clients from all cultures.
I would also join the minority-ethnic health mailbase list, there may be lots of people there who could also help.

A few years ago, I saw a copy of a personal organiser-format booklet that St. Mary's Hospital in London had put together for their clinical staff which gave detailed information on diet, death customs and other culturally-specific issues for use in the workplace. Has anyone else produced such a 'manual' and, if so, has its use been evaluated?
many thanks
