I don't know, but perhaps it had something to do with the fact that
Cardinal Wolsey dissolved the Augustinian priory of St Frideswide in,
I believe, the 1520s in order to turn the site into a college which
was to be named Cardinal College, after himself of course. His plans
came to naught, however, and Henry VIII continued the foundation as
Christchurch College, retaining the undemolished eastern half of the
priory church as the college chapel. Later in the 16th century, St
Frideswide's was turned, as well, into the cathedral of the new
diocese of Oxford (formerly Oxford had been in the diocese of
Lincoln), creating what, to my knowledge, is a unique combination:
cathedral and college chapel.
