Hi Maeve (Queen, I presume)
I really appreciate your information from the Codices. My meager information
on Fintan came from a variety of sources on the web and from misc. books,
incl. Adamnan's "Life of St. Columba". Now I'm getting a better picture but,
as one would expect, the picture deals mostly with him and not so much about
his works and environs.
I may get to the "Lives" of Fintan later on, after I exhausted other sources
and am willing to spend my time trying-out my Latin. Talk about a dead
language - with me, it's really dead.
I'll try to find the AA book, but I can't imagine that it could beat the
Shell Guide, coupled with the full set of the marvelous Discovery Series maps
- which show virtually every stone circle, ruined parish church, gallans,
raths, etc., along with such detail that every rural building is shown, along
with most driveways. I can't say enough about these maps. I wouldn't have
even attempted to do what I have been doing these last few years if I had had
to rely on the old 1/2" maps.
Regarding "getting in good with the local historian". Serendipitously, I did
that in 1998. I won't bring him into it (he's sort of a "reserved"
gentleman), but he has printed several brochures on the area and, although
historian is not his first occupation, he has been a great source of
information for me.
I'm still on the quest, and every piece of information helps me along the way.
Thanks again,
Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
