I think Ingegerd's is the point I was tring to make, but without Ingegerd's
depth of knowledge. 'Sheep's black' is presumably the black of eg monastic
habits - and really a dark brown. True black would require dye and be more
expensive - ?
(Does anyone remember the designer Farrah and his 26 shades of black?)

I don't think that "black" sheep's wool is actually black - it is dark
brown. In my home dialect (Northern Norway), at least, but also in
knitting
patterns, I think, this is called "sheep's black", meaning that it should
not be a modern, shiny black, but the much softer browny colour of black
sheep.
