The 2000 autumn package of pupil performance information
The presentation covers the DfEE/QCA/OFSTED "Autumn Package", background to
the value-added and benchmark analyses it contains, headline figures from
this year's Keystage results, and how these help schools' knowledge and use
of performance statistics as core management information. A demonstration
will be given of the 'Interactive' CD version of the Package.
This meeting is open to all. There is no charge for attendance and no need
to book. Further information is available from the secretary of the RSS
Education Section, David Goda - details below.

Is this an example of the RSS legitimising the use of official statistics?
I understand, partly from chapters in the Statistics and Society book, that
these measurement of pupil performance are unpopular with many teachers and
that there is widespread scepticism of the value of such performance
measurement systems.
Presentation at an RSS meeting does seem to lend authority to the package.
Does not this apparent blessing by the RSS makes it more difficult for
teachers and others to challenge the system?
