Women and Work: Pitfalls and Possibilities in Official Statistics
Measures of central tendency work well for studies of male employment, but
can be misleading for research on women, given female heterogeneity. A new
book, Work-Lifestyle Choices in the 21st Century: Preference Theory (OUP,
2000) predicts the increasing polarisation of women's work patterns in
modern societies, so that new measures and approaches to labour market
analysis must be developed. Several possibilities are explored.
