New MeSH
with Tony McCulloch
The British Library
24th January 2000
This half day course introduces the major changes for 2000 made to the
Medical Subject Headings by the US National Library of Medicine (NLM).
These include changes to a number of neurological terms (including
some important conditions); an interesting addition of `gatekeeping'
plus the addition of substances like feverfew, ginger, kava, hypericum
and tea tree oil. Tony will identify terms which have been dropped,
changes to the tree structures and to indexing policy. He will also
discuss the effect on searching of the growing trend for publishers to
transmit their journals to NLM in electronic form. The course will be
of value to anyone who searches MEDLINE, as well as all those who use
MeSH to index or catalogue their own records.
Tony McCulloch from the British Library Health Care Information
Service (HCIS) has over 12 years' experience in using MEDLINE. He is
responsible for indexing many of the British journals for inclusion on
the database. HCIS is an International Medlars Centre of the US
National Library of Medicine, providing indexing, document supply, and
training services; and acting as an agent for NLM publications.
