Hi all,
just a minor consideration with respect to the employment opportunity ad
as follows. Let's consider I'm a PhD student, so I might, in the medium
term, be interested in post-docs and similar openings.
I believe that geo-tectonics has a considerable number of subscribers,
from all over the world. These people work in all countries of the world,
are from all nationalities, do research (and therefore, learn the culture
of) in all regions of the world, no matter how remote or far away.
Although I understand that some lectureship openings require working
knowledge of the language belonging to the country where the opening is
available, I believe it is quite unsensible to spread an ad, that reaches
all corners of the world, in a self-limitating language. In a world
trying not to collapse onto nationalisms and inner wars, being
difference-aware is a key issue. And we are not
talking about, say, Chinese and Spanish, the former being the first spoken
language on the Earth, but about German, which, like Italian in my case,
is being spoken only within national boundaries. Now that I think about
this, Italians are known to have migrated almost everywhere, so I might
even send a message in Italian, and looking forward to be understood by a
considerable portion of subscribers..?!?
With kindest regards,
ciao (I'm told this is an international way to say 'Bye')
