Dr. Rubenfield, please understand, that I did not ask the question to
criticize
SDS. I believe--as you do that disability belongs in diversity programs in
Academe. That is why I make it a point here at UIC to make sure that every
diverse group planning a program knows that they need to think about persons
with disabilities as part of that diversity. I co-chair the Diverse Special
Interest Group at the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD)
and make it a point to make sure AHEAD remembers that they need to provide
information for their persons of color with disabilities. But what seems to
me to be the biggest problem in all of this is that adding disability to
diversity seems to mean adding a white experience of disability to diversity.
No one speaks of the double or triple impact of a woman of color with a
disability. few people have researched impact of race and disability, and
forgive me, but the Disability Culture Movement does not seem to include the
effect of society on racial and ethnic minorities with disabilities. My
reason
for asking the question is because I thought SDS, which is known for
researching and seeking to change the disability model from a medical to a
social model, did not seem to include all of our disabled society (which is
made up of a disproportionate number of minorities) I guess what I am asking
is:
"If not you--who? "If not now--when?" Please understand that though I
question the SDS, I have the utmost respect for what it has accomplished on
behalf of persons with disabilities--including myself. And I am willing to
help in any way I can.
