Dear All,
I would be grateful if you would bring the following Ph.D project to the
attention of recent graduates interested in a field based
structural/metamorphic project in the Sveconorwegian of SW Norway.
Many thanks,
Alistair Allen
3 Year Research Ph.D Project
Department of Geology, National University of Ireland, Cork.
Structural and Metamorphic Analysis of the Sveconorwegian of Central
Rogaland, SW. Norway
The project involves the structural and metamorphic analysis of the
Rogaland Complex in the Oltedal-Byrkjedal-Frafjord-Forsand area of Central
Rogaland, just to the east of Stavanger. The Rogaland Complex is a high
grade gneiss terrain consisting predominantly of granitoid gneisses
intruded into pelitic, semi-pelitic and calcareous metasediments. Mafic
intrusive bodies are also represented. The terrain is extreme, consisting
of deep glaciated valleys with vertical sides incised into a peneplaned
surface approximately 1000m in height. The area has not been mapped in
detail, and part of the project will involve mapping and structural
analysis to determine the structural relationships and structural history
of the complex. In addition, metamorphic analysis and thermobarometric
studies will be undertaken to evaluate the metamorphic history and P-T-t
path for the terrane, and age dating of appropriate material will be
investigated in an attempt to establish a chronological framework for the
various units identified in the terrane.
The UCC Geology Department has probe, cathodoluminescence and fluid
inclusion facilities, and geochemical and geochronological facilities can
be arranged.
Funding is via a UCC Scolarship of £4500 from which fees of ~£1500 are
deducted, plus an Enterprise Ireland PhD scolarship of a further £2000
Interested applicants should contact me by e-mail as soon as possible,
forwarding a CV (by e-mail if possible) plus the names and e-mail addresses
of at least 2 referees.
