Eurobasin School, Paris event XII:
Tectonic control of trap formation,
implications for petroleum exploration
29 November to 3 December, 1999
Course description
The course is designed to give an integrated approach of the formation of
oil traps from the large scale (plate tectonic context of sedimentary
basins) to the trap scale, through the description of geological facts and
geodynamic models. A particular emphasis will be put on the tectonic control
on the geometrical and physical evolution of basins.
Lectures will be devoted to the description of geological data (large scale
context, subsidence, deformation history), and to basin modelling (numerical
and analogue models).
Organisers: Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6), Laboratoire de
Tectonique
(Prof. Laurent Jolivet/Dr. Marie-Françoise
Brunet)
Institut Français du Pétrole (Prof. Bernard Durand)
Participation: The course is open to students from universities, research
institutions and industry within the European Union and affiliated nations.
Participants (post-graduate level) will be recruited through supervisors in
the participating organisations and by direct contact to Université Pierre
et Marie Curie. The seminar is suitable to up to 20 participants from
academia and industry.

Course Fee and Financial Support: The course fee (including course material
and accommodation) for up to 20 students is covered by the European
Commission. Applicants must be prepared to pay their own travel expenses
(home-Paris, return) and their own meals during the course.
Accommodation: Participants will be lodged in an hotel in the centre of
Paris.
Registration and Dead-line: Applications are invited from post-graduate
students at European universities, preferably in their first year of
research toward a PhD in some aspects of sedimentary basin analysis and
tectonics (e.g. within disciplines of structural geology, sedimentology,
resource assessment, environmental sciences). An application form and
preliminary program can be found at the Eurobasin School Website
(http://www.uib.no/People/nglrg/Eurobasin/). Application forms can be
transferred electronically, faxed, or submitted by post. The dead-line for
applications is 15 November, 1999.
