Dr. Sackett,
I'm sorry that you've taken my answers as being evasive -- they are not meant
to be that way.
First, it is not my job to hire or fire Dr. Lundberg -- the AMA Board of
Trustees only hires and fires the Executive Vice President (currently Dr.
Anderson) and the General Counsel for the AMA. The EVP is in complete charge
of the AMA staff (approximately 1000 individuals) and has the power to hire or
fire anyone he wants on that staff. As it is part of your question, it is
also not the job of the JAMA Editorial Board to hire or fire the Editor.
(Related to your other email to the listserve, I have already communicated with
Dr. Chalmers and have apologized to him for the Editorial Board being
officially notified by the AMA so late -- I am checking into the background of
that delay.) We (the BOT) were, however, advised by Dr. Anderson of his
pending action.
That being said, I am not in/was not in Dr. Anderson's position nor have I had
all of the interactions with Dr. Lundberg that he has had in their respective
roles as EVP (the head of the entire AMA staff) and Editor of JAMA (a member of
that AMA staff). But, I am supportive of Dr. Anderson's action in this matter
and would be supportive even had the article been as you postulated. I guess
your question is what I would do if I were in Dr. Anderson's shoes . . . given
my responses to this and previous emails, I think it should be clear that I
would have acted similarly.
I believe we may be at the point where we have to agree to disagree on this
issue.
Sincerely yours,
Andrew Thomas
