Dear list-members,
The JAMA affair has generated considerable interest on this list, as shown
by the comments, opinions, and rebuttals sent by dozens of you. It's been
the "hottest" topic that has ever appeared on the list.
But the messages are pretty long, and when they refer to (and therefore
enclose) previous messages, they have used up some members' email disk
space, preventing them from receiving other messages.
(In addition, 5 of the 1800+ of you have written to us that you find these
messages of low or no relevance to your reasons for joining the list, and
have suggested that we stop it. we've rejected that advice.)
How should we handle further discussions of the JAMA affair?
As "keepers" of the list and outspoken foes of censorship, Dave Sackett
and Douglas Badenoch don't plan to impose any restrictions on this
continuing debate.
Instead, we suggest that you keep the following possibilities in mind when
writing about it:
1. consider whether you want your message to go to the entire list (which
is fine with us and, as far as we know, preferred by most of you) or to
just some specific members of it (some of you already are doing this).
2. if commenting on an earlier message (and therefore wanting to refer to
it), consider summarising it in your note or enclosing just the bits of it
that are key to your message (of course this applies to all continuing
discussions on the list!)
other suggestions on how to continue the unrestricted exchange of views in
the face of limited disk space will be welcomed!
cheers
dls and db
