A new Research Programme at:
Urban Water Technology Centre, University of Abertay
Dundee:

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF IN-GROUND SUDS SYSTEMS IN
SCOTLAND

Objective: to investigate the effectiveness of in-ground
Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems in Scotland by
monitoring and inspecting as-built systems including
infiltration drains, infiltration basins and filter
drains.

Background

Many of the 'sustainable' urban drainage systems which
have been installed in Scotland involve some form of in-
ground storage and infiltration process. The concept
of the filter drain has been widely used in Scotland
because of the impermeable soils.

Research Objectives

The filter drain as an example, is one form of in-
ground SUD system which makes use of what infiltration
may be possible, but it also provides underground in-
pipe storage which can be controlled. Many different
types of system have been installed, but unfortunately,
poor management of construction sites has meant that
many of these drains have become blocked and
ineffective. These systems are not new concepts, but
their application to densely urbanised areas is
relatively untried.
The extent of the problem of poor performance is not
known and a principal component of the research will be
to assess whether these systems are indeed operating
poorly. Presuming that their performance is poor, the
first objective will be to identify the causes of poor
performance and to propose techniques whereby the
intended performance can be obtained reliably and cost
effectively. This will involve field visits and
inspections to a large number of sites and some
monitoring at a few.

A number of filter drain based stormwater disposal
systems have been installed in Aberdeen and other
cities in Scotland. Some of these systems are on major
routes, and in the Aberdeen example, a number of filter
drains have been constructed on an arterial route
running west from the city centre, a route which
carries relatively heavy traffic, buses etc. The road
has been reconstructed and the drainage in one length
of this road has been modified to permit instruments to
be installed which will monitor surface water flowrates
and qualities. The second objective of the research
will be to install and maintain this equipment to
determine the actual performance of this Aberdeen
system and one other at a site yet to be identified.

Funding

The research studentship is funded principally from the
University of Abertay Dundee's research grant
application.
Additional funding has been obtained from Yorkshire
Water PLC and the total grant available will be
comparable with a CASE award.

Location

The student will be resident in Dundee and will be
required to travel to field sites. A driving license
would be highly desirable.
