Search Station: The New National Maritime Museum's takes its collections into the 21st Century
The Search Station was officially launched at the National Maritime Museum yesterday evening with Peter Snow, BBCTomorow's World presenter, as special guest.
The Search Station is the first stage of the Museum's initiative to provide computerised access to its collections.
Located next to the Museum's library, it contains ten computer workstations and provides:
* themed highlights to the Collections
* over 40 Research Guides to related Maritime subjects
* Encyclopedia Titanica: a comprehensive online reference to the great shipping disaster
* access to general information on the Museum's Web Site
The Search Station currently offers:
* access to around 1500 of the Museum's exhibits
* national curriculum related material e.g. Trade and Empire theme
* a timeline for each theme and an atlas
* a 'Navigate' section that allows users to search the system by topic, caterory, title or keyword
* a Trade and Empire Quiz, interactive maps, animations, interactive maps, eyewitness accounts and film clips
Coming Soon from the Museum's Centre for Maritime Research:
* new themes: Exploration, Maritime Art and Sea, Stars & Time (August 1999)
* access to 6 themes on the Museum's Web site (Autumn 1999)
* the world's first fully refereed electronic Journal for Maritime Research
*and much much more!
