Margrethe:
After reading your description and Ebert's, I'd put Neil
LaButte's films in this genre as well (<In the Company of
Men> and <Your Friends and Neighbors>). His characters are
malevolent, cruel, but often somehow likable, a combination
which, in the end, causes the viewer to reflect
uncomfortably on (and question) his/her own peculiar
identification with the protaganists.
