For anyone interested there was a similar discussion on
this mailbase in january. I think the subject was 'what is
film'. The most obvious distinction I can think of when it
comes to the words movie and film are in people's
perceptions of their relative value. I seem to remember
Oliver Stone around the time of his row with Tarantino
saying of him 'he makes good movies, but he'll never make a
film'. Likewise you call something on channel four with the
members of the general public giving their views of the
latest releases Moviewatch and something on BBC 1 with an
old fart in a leather chair (Jonathan Ross or Barry Norman)
Film 99. This would seem to suggest that the definitions in
common use say more about how we look at what we see rather
than what we see.
Best Wishes
