EDITOR'S SPACE
If you're not already a DRS member, how's this for an offer you
simply cannot refuse? The book of the DRS conference "Quantum
Leap' held last year is now available and if you purchase a copy
you get a free year's membership of DRS thrown in for free.
The DRS continues to grow - in membership, in its influence as a
learned society worldwide, and in its representation of the
interests of its members and of the larger design research
community. Our web site www.drs.org.uk, which was updated
recently, is steadily receiving more hits per month. It has now
reached a stage of development where the Society would like to
appoint a webmaster to take over the everyday running of the
website by updating content and links etc. Someone is preferred
who would come to the post with an aptitude and facilities for
web management together with an interest in developing the site
further to provide better resources. There's no pay for the
job, just the satisfaction of working with the Society, though
we could cover any out of pocket expenses. This is of course a
job which could be done from anywhere in the world... If you
are interested, please send me an email with your basic details
and reasons for applying to [log in to unmask]
This newsletter should have gone out on 1 April except that I
was away from home, having attended part of the European Academy
of Design conference 'Design Cultures'. This was my first time
at an EAD event, it was a very enjoyable experience and I look
forward to the next one. I am not sure whether the proceedings
are available to non-delegates, but if you're listening Rachel,
maybe someone could let me know for next month's newsletter...
As this newsletter is not going out on 1 April, all the content
is dead factual. Honest.

DESIGN STUDIES AWARD
We are pleased to announce the winner of the 1998 Design Studies
Award, for the best paper published in the journal. The award is
to be made to Rianne Valkenburg and Kees Dorst, of the
Department of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of
Technology, The Netherlands, for their paper on 'The Reflective
Practice of Design Teams', published in Design Studies vol. 19,
no. 3, pp. 249-271.
The Design Studies Award is made annually, jointly by Elsevier
Science, the journal publishers, and the Design Research
Society. It comprises a certificate and a prize of UKP 500. The
criteria for the Award, in order of priority, are: contribution
to the development of the field of design research, originality
of research or scholarship, breadth of relevance, and clarity
and style of presentation. Votes for the Award are cast by the
journal Editors and Officers of the DRS.
Valkenburg and Dorst's paper reports a study of team design
activity, based on two multidisciplinary student design teams
working on entries for a Philips Design Competition for
remote-controlled robots. One team performed well, and went on
to win the competition, whereas the other team failed to submit
a final entry. In their study, Valkenburg and Dorst applied
Donald Schon's theory of 'reflective practice'. They developed a
new way of representing design activity, using Schon's concepts
of 'names, frames and moves'. The description method allowed
interesting comparisons to be made between the design processes
used by the two teams, especially in the contrasts between their
'naming' and 'moving' activities. The results of the study are
useful for design education and for the management and operation
of teamwork in design.

MANAGING NEW PRODUCT DESIGN
The key text 'Managing New Product Design' is a book for
practitioners, and keen students of design and management. It
was published by Taylor & Francis in 1999.
New product design and development is often the result of
personal vision. Harnessing this requires a special
receptiveness and enthusiasm at all levels of an organisation.
Such changes of attitude serve to unlock potential and can turn
the entire organisational pyramid upside down.
It is particularly important to understand and develop those
aspects of design which can be employed constructively by
designers in a strategic alliance with management and research.
The chapters of this book will help you do exactly that, they
represent the best current thoughts in this fascinating area.
They show how design-led product development has worked in a
wide range of industries, from design through to engineering and
management consultancy.
As a special offer, the book is available for UKP 45 plus UKP
2.25 post & packing: this includes free individual membership
of the Design research society for one year.
Send your book order together with a completed Design Research
Society membership application form to Professor Bob Jerrard,
School of Design Research, Birmingham Institute of Art & Design,
Birmingham, B4 7DX. Further details may be obtained from

THE DESIGN JOURNAL - CALL FOR PAPERS
An international refereed journal for all aspects of design
published by Gower Publishing in association with the European
Academy of Design
A call for papers
The Design Journal is a new international refereed journal which
provides a platform for the dissemination of design thinking and
research. The scope of the journal covers all aspects of design
practice, theory, management and education, and intends to be an
international forum for design professionals, researchers,
educators and managers.
The Design Journal aims to encourage discussion across
traditional boundaries between practice and theory, and between
disciplines defined by working media, materials and areas of
application. It exists to publish thought-provoking work which
will have a direct impact on design knowledge and which
challenges assumptions and methods.
All papers published in the journal are subject to a refereeing
process. This ensures a high standard of quality and a scholarly
approach to design. The editorial team aims to be truly eclectic
in its selection of source material, and open minded about the
evolving role of design in commercial and cultural contexts. A
distinguished, international editorial board includes educators
and practitioners drawn from many design disciplines across
Europe, the USA and Australia.
For details of how to submit a paper or a book
review, contact Nicky Staszkiewicz at Gower publishing
([log in to unmask]) for subscription details.
Papers for refereeing should be sent to the Editorial Chair,
Rachel Cooper ([log in to unmask]) and comment, books
for review, and other articles for consideration should be sent
to the Executive Editor, Jack Ingram ([log in to unmask]).
