Interesting question.
Technically, the vocabulary is "film," "movie," "cinema." Film is the
prima materia, and we speak of a film, or movie. Seeing enough movies we
can extrapolate an abstract thing called cinema.
However, my theory is that film has become such a saturating force. THus
in Hemingway's THe Sun Always Rises one of the women at a bar disses
(dishes) another by saying, "She doesn't film well" -- as if life were a
movie.
